Sleep problems are among the most common—and most overlooked—barriers to therapeutic success. When clients present with trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, or depression, insomnia often persists even as the co-occurring condition improves. Without targeted intervention, untreated insomnia can reinforce emotional distress, impair coping skills, and undermine progress in therapy.
Despite its strong evidence base, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is frequently misunderstood, with many clinicians mistaking it for basic “sleep hygiene.” In reality, CBT-I is a structured, effective, first-line treatment for insomnia disorder, supported by international clinical guidelines (Edinger et al., 2021).
This workshop provides a clear, practical, and science-informed approach to assessing and treating insomnia and nightmares in complex clinical presentations. Through demonstrations, case discussions, and applied skills training, participants will learn how to confidently integrate CBT-I strategies into their work—supporting clients in improving sleep, reducing symptoms, and restoring emotional resilience.
