Traumatic experiences often leave memory fragmented, causing certain inner parts to become frozen in time and stuck in survival-based roles. Exploring and supporting these parts has been a long-standing practice within the mental health field. A parts-work approach offers a transdiagnostic, non-pathologizing framework for treating trauma and complex trauma, honoring the protective adaptations that develop in response to overwhelming experiences.

Dr. Fatter will discuss the history of parts work models in trauma treatment. She will highlight how the neurobiology of “trauma time” affects memory consolidation and keeps certain parts of a person’s system stuck in the past, and will clarify the roles and functions of the three key categories of parts that commonly emerge in clinical work.

Dr. Fatter will offer practical strategies for conceptualizing clinical symptoms through a parts-based lens. Multiple entry points for beginning parts work with adults, adolescents, and children will be presented. Techniques for addressing trauma-related fears and concerns held by protective parts will be provided, along with interventions that support stabilization, foster communication within the client’s internal system, and cultivate self-compassion.

Essential interventions for working with complex trauma—including ways to address internal polarizations—will be taught. Dr. Fatter will discuss how parts work fits within a trauma-recovery model and how it relates to the effects of traumatic stress on the brain. Approaches for integrating somatic methods to support emotion regulation will also be included. Treatment planning considerations and guidance for applying a parts-work lens to common trauma outcomes such as addictions, grief, moral injury, and dissociation will be reviewed.

Applications of parts work with marginalized communities and with individuals experiencing ongoing trauma exposure will be discussed. Interventions to work with  intergenerational, historical, and collective trauma, will also be taught. How to utilize a parts work framework in couples counseling and group therapy will also be reviewed.

This workshop will be didactic, interactive, and experiential. Videos and case examples will provide participants an opportunity see parts work in action. Dr. Fatter will also guide experiential exercises to help mental health providers deepen awareness of their own parts.

  • Apply an ego state case conceptualization to a clinical case example.
  • Describe two types of parts mapping to get started in applying parts work techniques with clients.
  • Utilize mindfulness-based and self-compassion practices to support inner communication in the client’s system.
  • Apply attachment-based techniques to support clients working with inner child parts.
  • Examine the benefits, risks and contraindications of using a parts model approach with clients.
  • Evaluate the transference and countertransference relational dynamics through the lens of parts work.
