Our children are often entering their homes and classrooms in survival mode and bringing with them the behaviours that make it challenging for us to take the lead and build relationships with them. And often behavioural problems are framed as disciplinary issues that must be “fixed,” rather than understanding them as an indication that a child has an emotional need that needs to be filled. As humans, we are emotional beings … but what is the purpose of emotion? And what happens when we lose access to our feelings? When we understand the link between emotion and behaviour, we can better respond. In this session we will explore some of the common roots of troubling behaviour, including aggression and anxiety, as well as how we can create the conditions for the emotional safety that our children and students need in order to be emotionally healthy and receptive to learning.
Reclaiming our Students:
Children are more anxious, aggressive, and shut down than ever. Faced with this epidemic of emotional health crises and behavioural problems, teachers are asking themselves what went wrong. Why have we lost our students? More importantly: How can we get them back? Hannah Beach, a celebrated educator and specialist in the field of emotional health, and Tamara Neufeld Strijack, clinical counsellor and academic dean of the Neufeld Institute, provide a thoughtful guide to restoring the student-teacher relationship and creating the conditions for change. Reclaiming Our Students empowers teachers with relationship-based strategies to restore their leadership role and build emotional safety and inclusion in the classroom.
Tamara will be presenting at The Developmental and Emotional Challenges with Children and Adolescents conferences in Calgary and Victoria this Fall. Available in-person or online. More information here
