Addressing Developmental Addressing Developmental and Early Attachment Trauma in Childhood Early Attachment Trauma in Childhood

Presented by Carissa Muth, Psy.D., CCC, R.Psych

8:30am – 11:45am

Early experiences serve as the definitive biological and psychological blueprint for a person’s entire life, influencing how they manage stress, navigate relationships, see themselves, and maintain physical health. Understanding the “attachment frame” provides the foundation for understanding holistic health. This workshop bridges the gap between complex neurobiology and everyday practice, helping participants move beyond symptom management to address the core relational ruptures that drive chronic distress. By exploring how early “wounds” reshape the brain and body, participants will learn to identify the survival-based origins of maladaptive behaviors, become trauma informed, and develop effective treatments. The workshop will dive into the neurobiological “cascade” that occurs when the brain’s fear centers, like the amygdala, become hyper-reactive due to chronic stress and what to do about it. This training provides the language and strategies needed to shift the fundamental professional question from “What is wrong with this child?” to “What happened to this child?”.

Fostering Executive Skills in Pre-School (2-5) and School Age (6-12) Children

12:45pm – 4:00pm

Executive functions act as the brain’s “air traffic control” system, governing the working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control that allow children to manage multiple streams of information at once. This three-hour workshop examines how these critical cognitive processes emerge and how they are significantly influenced by early attachment and trauma. Professionals will explore the developmental milestones of the prefrontal cortex, understanding why a four-year-old’s “meltdown” is often a biological limitation of inhibitory control rather than a simple behavioral choice. By synthesizing current research on neuroplasticity, the course provides a roadmap for participants to identify executive dysfunction before it leads to chronic academic or social failure. Participants will leave with evidence-based strategies to support children in building the internal scaffolding necessary for lifelong emotional and cognitive regulation. Finally, the session emphasizes that executive skills are not fixed traits but are malleable abilities that can be strengthened through consistent, trauma-informed relational support.

Learning Objectives

Morning 8:30am – 12:00pm

  1. Analyze the neurobiological impacts of early trauma on brain development, specifically focusing on the structural alterations in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.
  2. Apply regulation tools to stabilize dysregulated children and support neuroplastic repair.
  3. Differentiate between various attachment styles to tailor communication and intervention strategies for maximum professional efficacy.

Afternoon 1:00pm – 4:00pm

  1. Understand the structural development of the prefrontal cortex in children ages 2 to 12 and identify how early trauma can stall the maturation of working memory and inhibitory control.
  2. Learners will evaluate the difference between “top-down” executive failures and “bottom-up” emotional dysregulation to select the most effective intervention for a struggling child.
  3. Attendees will demonstrate the ability to design “scaffolding” strategies that accommodate developmental gaps in executive skills within clinical, educational, and medical settings.
  4. Clinicians and educators will synthesize attachment theory with cognitive training to create environments that foster neuroplastic growth in children with identified executive function deficits.
