Cannabis is already woven into the daily lives of many Canadians, meaning most health professionals and educators encounter individuals who use cannabis or are considering it. This workshop provides a comprehensive, evidence-informed introduction to cannabis science, cannabis culture, and cannabis-related mental health considerations.
Spend a day learning the essentials: What are THC and CBD? What distinguishes sativa from indica? How do different strains and product combinations work? What separates recreational from medical use? What methods of delivery exist—and how do they differ? What’s available in dispensaries, clinics, or illicit markets? How do you talk to clients about cannabis use? What are the risks and benefits for anxiety, depression, trauma, psychosis, and more?
Understanding today’s evolving cannabis landscape will enhance your ability to engage meaningfully with clients and students—helping you ask informed questions, explore motivations and behaviours, and understand where cannabis fits within broader mental-health contexts. This workshop introduces cutting-edge research alongside practical information rarely covered in traditional training.
Led by Dr. Zach Walsh, one of Canada’s leading experts in cannabis and mental health, this session integrates his clinical work, his own research, and the latest empirical findings. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how cannabis influences cognition, emotion, and mental well-being, and how to identify when cannabis use becomes problematic.
Clinical Professionals: All mental health professionals including, but not limited to Clinical Counsellors, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Social Workers, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Hospice and Palliative Care Workers, School Counsellors, Youth Workers, Mental Health Workers, Addiction Specialists, Marital & Family Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Vocational Rehabilitation Consultants and all professionals looking to enhance their therapeutic skills.
Zachary Walsh, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the UBC Department of Psychology and Director of the Therapeutic, Recreational and Problematic Substance Use lab at UBC. Having completed a clinical internship and a research fellowship at the Brown University Centre for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, Dr. Walsh is a registered clinical psychologist who has published and presented internationally on issues related to cannabis and mental health. His research has been supported by the Canadian Institute of Health Research, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Health Canada, BC Interior Health Authority, the Peter Wall Endowment, and the American Psychological Association. He is currently the Principal Investigator for several cannabis use studies, including a clinical trial of cannabis for PTSD.
