Enduring and pervasive pathological personality traits, also identified as personality disorders, often create barriers to the therapeutic alliance. While each category of personality traits, such as dependent or avoidant, will result in a different presentation, all create problems in the therapeutic relationship. This can be difficult for counsellors to navigate and often can be misperceived as resistance. Difficulties with attachment are often at the core of most personality disorders, and, as such, utilizing a relationship centric therapeutic approach in addition to skill development can create fundamental shifts for clients. In this 3-hour webinar, Dr. Carissa Muth will provide an integrated approach borrowing from CBT, DBT, and Emotion Focused Individual Therapy in order to provide multiple tools for addressing pathological personality traits in client.

  • Understand contributing factors to the development of personality disorders
  • Identify personality traits as they manifest in the therapeutic setting
  • Utilize relationship based and skills-based interventions to address personality traits
