This course brings the treatment of traumatic stress and addiction/substance use disorders into the 21st Century. In 1995, Evans and Sullivan published Treating the Addicted Survivor of Trauma that advocated treating both of these conditions simultaneously and the field has slowly evolved toward this more efficacious and humane method of service delivery for addicted survivors. This on-demand video presentation provides 6.0 contact hours of distilled content from Dr. Gentry’s Certified Addiction-Informed Mental Health training that he provides for clinical professionals in the US. It offers a clarified understanding of the subtle differences and similarities between addiction and substance abuse (disorder). Using attachment trauma research and the voluminous research with the Aversive Childhood Experiences (ACE), this course establishes trauma as the core cause of addiction and the necessity of addressing traumatic stress for survivors to enjoy lasting relief from their unconscious patterns of posttraumatic self-defense, which includes addiction.
This course introduces The Empowerment and Resilience Treatment Structure—a generic protocol for the delivery of the “Active Ingredients” that are imbedded in all the evidence-based treatments for traumatic stress and substance abuse. These active ingredients include: therapeutic relationship; positive expectancy; life-skills building; relaxation/self-regulation; exposure; and cognitive restructuring/psychoeducation. This course provides interventions to address each of these throughout the treatment trajectory working with addicted survivors. Primarily, this course teaches the skills of self-regulation—the interruption of the physiological and cognitive threat response in real time. This skill combined with coaching clients to confront situations in which they perceive threat becomes an in vivo exposure process that allows addicted survivors (and all other clients) to gradually lessen their posttraumatic symptoms in a safe and effective way. This method of working with past trauma has become best practice for working with addicted survivors and those suffering with the symptoms of complex PTSD because it allows them to resolve the effects of past trauma without accessing the trauma memories and all the destabilization that imaginal exposure can cause.
In addition to developing skills sufficient to immediately implement in vivo exposure as a tool in your practice, this course also offers many skills for safety and stabilization in early treatment. Following the completion of this course you will feel empowered to help your clients who are addicted survivors with proven methods that lessen their symptoms, support their recovery and help them transition into effective and satisfying lives.
