We are pleased to announce the Virtual Western Canadian Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Conference: Proven, Effective and Concrete Strategies airing online Wednesday, May 25, 2022, 8:30am to 4:00pm.

Anxiety was at epidemic levels even before the COVID-19 pandemic and has only worsened exponentially since. Anxiety is the most common mental health concern among children and teens and is not something they outgrow. Indeed, most mental health problems in adulthood begin as anxiety in childhood and adolescence as anxiety.

Early intervention is essential to minimize later problems with depression and other social, emotional, behavioural, academic, and health difficulties. Unfortunately, most children go without effective support until they are teens, a time at which they are extremely susceptible for developing severe anxiety disorders. Without having a full understanding of anxiety and knowing what to look for, we can easily miss when anxiety shows up. Worse, many well-intentioned parents, teachers, and professionals and may even unwittingly make anxiety stronger in their attempts to make children feel better.

Join international presenters, Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., Margaret Wehrenberg, Psy.D. and Meghan Barlow, Ph.D., Christine Dargon, Ph.D.,  for this special event.

Don’t Worry About It: Simple & Practical Strategies for Reducing & Managing Anxiety Within the School Setting presented by Meghan Barlow, Ph.D.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common conditions diagnosed in children and adolescents and everyone feels anxious from time to time. Despite the prevalence of anxiety disorders, anxiety has been referred to as the “great masquerader” because it can present in

surprising ways in and out of the classroom. This workshop will provide educators with an understanding of anxiety as well as frequently co-occurring conditions including depression, autism, ADHD, and learning disorders. A review of specific types of anxiety disorders and how to distinguish these conditions from “healthy stress”and “anxious moments” will be presented. Participants will learn practical strategies for implementing changes within the classroom to support students with anxiety. Additionally, participants will learn tools for teaching coping skills and working with families to determine appropriate and effective school based supports.

The Anxiety Compass: The Ultimate Process to Help Children & Teens Tame Anxiety Gremlins presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D.

It is critical that all adults who may have to help children and teens with anxiety first develop a thorough understanding of what is going on for children and teens in today’s world, the pressures they face, and what happens when the demands put on them outweigh their capacity to cope. Then, they must learn what is truly effective to support this population and build their capacity to manage anxiety.

Thankfully, anxiety is highly treatable. There are essential considerations for effective interventions that are not commonly known nor practiced but are easy to learn. This webinar presentation is vital for anyone working with children and teens who experience anxiety. Clinicians and educators will develop a deep understanding of anxiety from a transdiagnostic perspective. Special considerations are also given to Generations Z and Alpha and the specific stressors they face that contribute to anxiety and emotional dysregulation. Participants will also learn effective tools and processes to help children and teens manage their anxiety successfully across all contexts while promoting their overall courage, confidence, resilience, and well-being.

When is it Generalized Anxiety and When is it Panic? Proven and Effective Treatment Strategies presented by Margaret Wehrenberg, Psy.D.

Many adolescents feel the impact of anxiety but they don’t know how to describe it. It is common for them to say that they are panicking, yet they do not meet the clinical description of panic disorder. Counsellors will serve them best if they can quickly distinguish between acute generalized  anxiety and panic because these two disorders are very different from each other and require different kinds of interventions. This session will describe the  similarities and differences between acute generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder and describe the most effective, rapid treatments for them.

Treating Anxiety Disorders in Children & Teens presented by Christine Dargon, Ph.D.

The increasing rate of stress and trauma to children, which includes divorce, family breakdown, violence in society, the media, and a failing school system, has produced a “shell shocked” generation suffering from anxiety in many cases.

The challenge for educators and clinicians is to recognize anxiety in children and help them cope. Dr. Christine Dargon will teach you how and why anxiety develops in children and adolescents. She will present practical treatment strategies that can be applied immediately.

Join anxiety expert, Dr. Christine Dargon to increase your effectiveness with the various manifestations of child anxiety, Dr. Dargon will address the various anxiety disorders with case examples and clinical vignettes.
